Trichotillomania
Trichotillomania is a mental condition in which individuals experience a frequent and impulsive urge to pull out hair from eyebrows, eyelashes, scalp and other parts of the body. It's not just a 'bad habit', it's a recognized condition that can feel incredibly difficult to control.
Beyond the physical act, this condition carries a heavy emotional toll. Visible hair loss can lead to deep insecurities and a painful feeling of being 'different' or socially unaccepted. The shame and effort to hide it can be exhausting.
While some people may manage their trichotillomania with greater ease, for others resisting this compulsion to pluck out hair represents a significant struggle that is emotionally exhausting. For these individuals, Trichotillomania may represent a kind of positive feedback loop where the stress induced by the plucked hair leads to further pulling.
It's important to know this exists on a spectrum. For some, the urges are manageable. For others, resisting the compulsion is a monumental, daily struggle. This can create a draining cycle: stress triggers the urge to pull, pulling causes more distress about the hair loss, and that distress fuels more urges.
Our movement
The Purple Star Movement was created with one clear goal: to turn a hidden struggle into a visible symbol of connection and support.
